Interview With Careers Officer Emma Flynn

Careers Office Griffith College

Recently, we sat down with Griffith College Careers Officer Emma Flynn to learn more about the Career Services available to Griffith College students and graduates!

How Did You Pave Your Career As A Careers Officer?

I have worked in education since I graduated, so I have 18 years of experience in the sector. I was an Alumni Officer at a university for a couple of years before moving to another college where I was an Employee Liaison Executive. The experience I gained in this role, my experience of studying HR in college, and having a real desire to work with other people helped me realise this was a space I really wanted to move into. So, I decided to pursue a Postgraduate in Training and Education at Griffith College. A job then came up for the Careers Advisor role in Griffith, and that's how I ended up where I am today!

What Career Services Are Available To Griffith College Students?

Students come to us for help with CVs, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles, interview preparation, and general career guidance in a career coaching appointment. As I always say to students, if they have any questions or if anything comes up that they feel is career-related, they can always knock on our door and ask!

Are Careers Services Also Available to Griffith College Graduates?

Absolutely! Our official line is that graduates can use the Careers Services for up to 12 months after graduating, but we have never turned a graduate away. Many of our graduates participate in our Mentorship Programme, a three-month career mentoring programme for our second-year undergraduate students which aims to match students with professionals who are college graduates. Our graduates are very good at giving their time, so we are also very happy to help any graduates!

How Can Current Students/Graduates Get In Touch With The Griffith College Careers Office?

Current students can contact us via Moodle. We have a Moodle page specifically for the Careers Office, which every student is automatically enrolled in. Students can find all of our information there, including our Career Resources and Jobs Board. You can also book a one-on-one appointment or submit your CV for review. Alternatively, you can email us or pop into our office! Graduates can fill out our Contact Us Form to book an appointment and can also visit us on campus.

We offer appointments both online and in person, and there is a pretty even split between how our students/graduates choose to meet with us.

Are Careers Services Available To Students At All Griffith College Campuses?

Yes, our Careers Services are available to students at each of our campuses in Dublin, Cork (Marion Courtney is the Careers Officer for our Cork campus), and Limerick! The only difference is that an in-person service is not available at our Dublin City Centre or Limerick campuses, but all of the same services and virtual 1-1 appointments are still available.
