Course Overview
We offer flexible learning with a popular selection of English for Academic Purposes Programmes.
This programme is for learners with a higher level of English who need to develop their language skills in specific areas related to their continued study, or professional development.
Why Study English at Griffith College?
Learners have an opportunity to choose academic modules carefully selected from Griffith College’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, they can then support these choices with 15 hours of English in our language institute.

Course Details
If you choose our gap year or semester abroad programme, you are able to choose modules from our extensive range of degree programmes and support them with 15 hours of English in our language school. This programme is designed to maximise your exposure to authentic language in your specific areas of academic and/or personal interest, all the while increasing your direct language development via 15 hours of contact time in our language school. It is our most immersive programme and provides direct opportunities to interact with native speakers in lectures and tutorials.
As the starting dates are fixed with the academic year, you will partake in the College induction as well as being introduced to all of the clubs, societies, entertainment and events that the Students’ Union has to offer.
The programme is designed for learners of English who have reached a minimum CEF B2 level and aspire to CEF C1 and above.
A wide selection of academic modules are offered from a range of disciplines including:
- Business, Marketing
- Journalism and Media
- Design
- Hospitality Management
- Photography and Computing
Participation in academic modules is subject to availability and dependent on the language level of the students on commencement of the programme.
There are two intakes per year; one in September and one in January/February.
Timetables
Gap year and Semester Abroad commences in February and September of each year in line with the academic intake. Once a student chooses which modules they wish to study, they will then receive their individual timetables.

Progression
Academic Progression
A semester abroad or gap year programme can gain you exemptions from future study at Griffith College. It can also be used as credits for study in your Home university, enabling you to complete a portion of your degree with us.
Career Progression
Competency in the English Language is a requirement in most professions in Ireland, as well as abroad. Successful completion of a Griffith Institute of Language (GIL) English for General Purposes Programme will give students an advantage in whatever career path they choose to pursue.
