Griffith College's Greg O'Brien Writes on 'Gen AI in College'
We are delighted to share a news article on Generative AI in college written for the Irish Independent by our very own Learning Technologist, Greg O'Brien.
*The following excerpt has been taken from Greg O'Brien's article in The Irish Independent*
"So, you’re starting college, and everything is new. If you’re new to generative AI (and it’s been hard to avoid), it is basically an amazing predictive generator. AI can guess in language, image or video.
Sure, there’s a lot of super-complex stuff going on in the background, and you can read about that on the web, but AI reads or listens to what you put in and crunches the numbers on what you probably want.
I say guess, but I really mean predict.
Our day-to-day use of AI can seem like you are chatting to a person online. All that is happening is the AI answers what it thinks is the most likely response.
But it’s not a person. It’s a language predictor.
AI eats a whole bunch of the internet, books and our data on various socials, and predicts what its response to you is based on that.
AI is in everything now. It’s popping up everywhere: Snapchat, Messenger, Copilot, Google, and thousands of other apps and software. Most software you open now will have a little starry icon. This is the AI feature. "
