Griffith Hosts 2018 Leinster School of Music & Drama ‘Excellence Awards’
Dublin's Ava McKevitt and Navan's Fern Kelly were the overall winners at the 2018 LSMD Excellence Awards, hosted at Griffith College Dublin.
Ava, who currently attends lessons with Gillian Oman in Independent Theatre Workshop, was nominated for the Overall Winner of the Excellence Award for Speech & Drama following her excellent score of 95% in her LSMD Certificate Solo Acting Exam. At the ceremony itself, Ava performed a piece from Once a Catholic by Mary O’Malley. Fern currently attends lessons with Giovanna Feeley in Meath. She was nominated for the Overall Winner of the Excellence Award for Music after receiving an impressive 97% in the Grade 5 LSMD Musical Theatre exam. During the ceremony, Fern performed the song ‘Think of Me’ from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera. Both winners received a coveted trophy and cheque for €300.
Launched in 2004 to mark the school’s centenary year, the LSMD Excellence Awards is open to the 15,000 students throughout Ireland who took the school’s exams in the last year. The top 320 students who participated in the LSMD exams are chosen to compete in the Excellence Awards and finalists are chosen from this group to perform at the Excellence Awards Concert which takes place annually in Griffith College.
Commenting on the awards, Karen Casey, Head of Faculty of The Leinster School of Music & Drama at Griffith College, said: “This year’s Excellence Awards at Griffith College showcased the very best in talent across the areas of music and speech & drama.
