Over 600 students attend free maths revision workshop at Griffith College Dublin
Another year, another successful Maths Revision Workshop at Griffith College Dublin. The initiative, which sees students from all around the country come to Griffith College for a free intensive maths workshop given by the irrepressible Tomas Mac Eochagain, had over 650 students in attendance. And that's before the Cork and Limerick workshops take place at all (they will take place on the 4th and 5th of April respectively).
In total, over 200 schools from around the country were represented with students travelling from as far away as Donegal and Kerry for the workshop. Aoife Milton, a student from Tipperary said "it was a great day, and Tomas was great craic. He's not your typical maths teacher - that's for sure. We had seven hours of revision but it didn't feel that long. I've definitely got a lot to work on for the last few months ahead of the exams."
Her feelings were echoed by fellow student Alex Daly, who said "it was a great event. I can't believe it was free. It's always good to get a different view or approach to things and the lecturer came at things in a different way than I'm used to so that was great. I feel I've learned a lot - and feel better about the run-in to the exams now."
The tutor the speakers were talking about is our very own Dr Tomas Mac Eochagain - Director of Academic Programmes here at Griffith Colllege. His pHD is in the area of Leaving Cert Mathematics teaching and he said that he "loves this kind of teaching". While seven hours of teaching Leaving Certs might be a daunting prospect for some, Mac Eochagain says that he thoroughly enjoys the process. "It's great to interact with the students and see where they are at with their studies. Some of them would amaze you with the questions they ask and there's a great energy around the college when they are around!
