The fashion industry is undergoing a remarkable transformation towards sustainability, embracing innovative materials such as organic plant based leather and cutting-edge technology. From sustainable fabrics to circular fashion, digital design software such as Clo3D, is moving fashion towards a greener future. At Griffith College the fashion design students explore how these trends are reshaping the industry.

Reducing Waste with Clo3D Fashion Design

At Griffith, new technology plays a pivotal role in reducing fashion waste. The Programme Director, Jane Leavey commented, “The traditional fashion design process typically involves the creation of several physical prototypes before the final garment is made. This results in significant material waste. But now, Griffith fashion students have the added advantage of making these adjustments virtually. Our students use Clo3D, which is a digital design tool that eliminates the need for physical samples until the final stage of production. This greatly reduces waste. It’s a much more sustainable practice.”

Clo3D is a powerful tool that allows designers to create and visualise garments in a digital space before any physical samples are made.

Griffith College equips its fashion design students with skills in using Clo3D, ensuring they are prepared for the future of sustainable fashion. By adopting digital prototyping, designers can experiment with new ideas without the environmental cost associated with traditional sample-making. An example of this could be seen at the Griffith Creative showcase. Fashion design student Betty Crichton’s final year collection, INKOGNITO,  demonstrates her use of Clo3D to create realistic renderings of her designs on her virtual avatar, visualising the garments in digital form, before making the final garments. This not only reduces waste but also speeds up the design process, allowing for more creativity and innovation.

 Towards a Greener Future

The future of fashion is looking greener than ever, with sustainability becoming a core focus. By embracing circular fashion, innovative materials like mushroom and apple leather, sustainable fabrics, and digital design technologies like Clo3D, the industry is moving towards a more environmentally friendly model.

For those interested in pioneering sustainable fashion, Griffith College offers a comprehensive Fashion Design programme that combines traditional skills with modern, eco-conscious practices. By understanding and adopting these trends, we can all contribute to a more sustainable and stylish future.
