Biography

Martin is a Programme Director at Griffith College Cork. Their research interests include sociolinguistics, in particular linguistic issues surrounding speakers of minority languages and their identities, minority language use, maintenance, transmission and language attitudes. They completed their undergraduate degree in Business in Tourism at Munster Technological University in Cork, where they developed an interest in the intersection of language and culture.

To explore the complexities of language acquisition and communication further, they pursued an MA in Applied Linguistics at University College Cork. This broadened their academic horizons and deepened their appreciation for the nuances of language usage in diverse contexts. Their doctoral research in Applied Linguistics at University College Cork focused on the language practices and experiences of minority speakers. They conducted a cross-country comparison of linguistic communities, examining how societal attitudes, historical legacies, and cultural identities influence linguistic behaviours.
