Biography

Dr. Níall Meehan is the head of the Journalism & Media Faculty and teaches undergraduate and graduate students on society and the media. Before coming to Griffith, Níall taught in Dublin City University. His research concentrates on the effect of modernisation on representations of the past in Irish society, and how these affect knowledge in the present. As part of this endeavour, he has researched coverage of abuse affecting children in Protestant ethos institutions in the Republic of Ireland. This has branched out into analysis of police handling of abuse in Northern Ireland in the early 1970s, research that formed the basis of a BBC NI documentary. He has been interviewed in relation to his research on RTE, Newstalk, TV3, and the BBC. Níall has written for Field Day, the Journal of Communications, Media, Culture and Society, The Journal of Communication, History Ireland, Village Magazine, the Irish Times, the Irish Independent, the Examiner and the Sunday Business Post. His research output can be viewed here. Níall enjoys teaching young people the essential skills of academic research and evidence-based writing, while opening up their curiosity about the world around them.
