In the vibrant design studios of Griffith College in Dublin, Abby O'Connell, a 23-year-old BA (Hons) in Fashion Design student from Kilkenny, has transformed her grief into a powerful tribute through fashion. Abby recently unveiled her deeply personal collection, '1968', in memory of her late father, Richard 'Dick' O'Connell. This collection highlights Abby's talent, reflecting her journey of growth and resilience, and her aptitude for storytelling through design.

'1968' is named after the year her father was born and is filled with personal anecdotes and meaningful details. Abby describes her collection as a testimony to growth, strength, and resilience. Initially envisioning a transition from light to dark colours, she later chose darker hues to better represent her experience. The collection features a dark palette in denim and black leather, symbolising durability and strength.

Abby acknowledges that her collection might be seen as too personal by some, however, she remains unapologetically true to her vision. "The most challenging aspect was getting my point across to other people - they see my collection that is comprised of all black and think, are you okay?" she admits. Through her work, Abby hopes to vocalise all her emotions, regardless of whether people fully understand.

To add powerful personal elements into the collection, Abby incorporated a poem written by her sister and seatbelts that represent the tragic plane crash which took her father’s life. '1968' this is not just a collection, it's a love letter to her father and an invitation to others to open up about their grief. With each stitch and spray-painted stroke, Abby keeps her father's memory alive, showcasing the enduring power of love beyond loss. Through her work, Abby hopes to vocalise all her emotions and inspire others to express their grief. As she prepares to graduate from Griffith College, Abby looks forward to continuing her journey in fashion design, creating clothes that tell a story and convey a message.
