Spotlight on Success: Sophia Sauer, Fashion Designer

In this edition of our Spotlight On Success series, we introduce you to Griffith College alumna and Fashion Designer, Sophia Sauer.

Since graduating from Griffith College with a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design, Sophia has built a strong foundation in the fashion industry, blending her creative vision with a practical understanding of modern design. Sophia is passionate about exploring sustainable approaches to fashion and has hands-on expertise in working within the industry's fast-paced demands.

A highlight of Sophia’s journey was her Bachelor’s collection at Griffith College, 'HOW LONG IS NOW,' in which she focused on giving sustainable fashion a fresh, modern edge. 

Experimenting with natural fabrics like cotton, wool, and silk, she used a zero-waste dyeing process that incorporated compost and organic waste to create unique patterns. The result was a visually captivating print with organic shapes, earthy colours, and subtle leaf patterns that gave the fabric an authentic, natural flow. This project underscored Sophia’s belief that sustainable fashion doesn’t have to be limited to rough materials or dull colours; instead, she envisions modern pieces that customers can cherish for years.

Sophia’s talent and attention to detail were further demonstrated when she won the 2022 Beacon Hospital Uniform Competition. She designed a uniform that combined quality, comfort, functionality and style, aiming for a look that would remain elegant and relevant even a decade later.

In her most recent role as a Junior Sportswear Designer, Sophia gained valuable experience working with high-performance materials such as polyester, which is commonly used in activewear for its durability. While working in a fast-fashion setting, she continued to seek out small ways to improve the sustainability of her designs, whether by exploring new print techniques or considering durable styles that would last longer in customers’ wardrobes.
