Spotlight on Success: Arthur Lopes, Filmmaker

GC50 Spotlight Blog Header

Hailing from Brazil, Arthur Lopes is not only a multiple award-winning filmmaker but also a Griffith College alumnus, having completed the BA in Film and TV Production in 2021.

In 2021, Arthur found international success with a documentary he directed named 'Libre: A Celebration of the Queer Body'. The documentary aims to address body image issues within the queer community, artistically portray those vulnerabilities, and open the minds of those willing to learn and understand.

The documentary has been awarded multiple accolades, such as 'Best Documentary Short' at the Prague International Indie Film Festival 2021, 'Best Film' at the LGBTQ+ Toronto Film Festival 2021, 'Best LGBTQ Documentary at Venice Shorts 2021', 'Best Documentary' at the National Student Media Awards in 2021, and ‘Best Art Direction’ at the Brazilian International Film Festival in Dublin.

However, recognition for Lopes' work has not been restricted to first-place prizes, with the documentary also officially selected to be shown at the Dublin International Film Festival, the Cannes Indie Shorts Awards, and the Montreal Independent Film Festival. You can watch an insightful clip of Arthur discussing the project on our Facebook page, while the documentary itself can be viewed on YouTube.

Today, Arthur's journey at Griffith continues as a lecturer in 'Video Production & Editing, Video Journalism and Documentary'. During his time here, Arthur has also been heavily involved in the creation of our successful Global Student Ambassador Programme. The programme aims to promote diversity and inclusion across all of Griffith's campuses while also encouraging an interchange of ideas between people of different nationalities and areas of study.
